Turn Your Worries into Laughter

Most people are familiar with the old adage “Laughter is the best medicine.” This little pearl of wisdom has helped many people regain their perspective and deal with life’s challenges in a more lighthearted manner.  Every person, from every walk of life, experiences fear, hardship or periods of struggle at some point .  It is an inescapable fact of life. Turn Your Worries Into Laughter!

While some are crippled by fears and crumble in the face of challenges, others seem to find an uncanny ability to tackle them head on.  Have you ever wondered why it is some people just manage to make it through tough situations with ease and grace?  Chances are it’s because they’ve learned the value of humor and its ability to ease stress and bring proper perspective.

Not only is a good dose of humor great for easing stress; scientific studies have shown that laughter also  improves the learning process.  If you learn to laugh at life’s challenges, you’re more likely to come up with creative solutions to problems.

Other scientific data has shown that laughter creates physical changes such as an increase in oxygen intake that stimulates the cardiovascular system and muscles. Endorphins are also released by the brain, promoting calm and elevating the mood.  Other research has shown a connection between good humor and strong immunity.  Negative thinking triggers stress which taxes the immune system, but positive thoughts release neuropeptides that not only fight stress, but help prevent more serious illnesses as well.

Improve your sense of humor and you will improve your health and overall outlook.  Even if you can’t find humor in the current situation; take a break from it and indulge in something that does elicit a laugh or two.  Spend time with those who make you laugh, or fake it until you make it.  The physical act of laughing, even if it feels forced at first, will still have positive effects on the body and mind.

Take a moment and step back from the situation.  With a little distance; many of our troubles have a humorous side.  Have you ever faced a day that seemed like a catastrophe, but as you reflected on it later, it made you laugh out loud? Perhaps the troubles you face today are going to be the fuel for a good story later.  Always remember that “this too shall pass” and take life in stride.  Even with it’s troubles, life is beautiful and it’s even more so when we consciously seek joy instead of worry.
